WOHS students save lives with shaved heads

With the West Orange High School ice hockey season behind them, sophomores Luke Adelhelm and Zack Coppola skated off in a new direction.
During the weekend, Luke and Zack shaved their heads in a fundraising effort to raise money for children with cancer.
The two boys raised nearly $800 together, and that number is growing.
Children fighting cancer lose not only their hair, but also years of their childhood and sometimes their lives.
Compared to their struggle, Luke and Zack felt that shaving their heads is a small sacrifice and the money raised will make such a difference for these children.
This “hair-raising” event took place on Saturday at the Cedar Grove Elks club.
The sponsoring organization, St. Baldrick’s, has raised more than $50 million since its inception in 2000, making it the world’s largest fundraising event for childhood cancer.
Every year, 160,000 children are diagnosed with cancer worldwide. Cancer is the No. 1 disease killer of children in the United States and Canada and it has been shown that research saves lives.
St. Baldrick’s research grants help fill crucial funding gaps at medical institutions where children are treated for cancer, ensuring the finest care for every child.
To date, more than 106,000 volunteers have shaved their heads in solidarity with children who are battling cancer at more than 2,400 events in 50 states and 24 countries.
