The Orange-West Orange Chapter of UNICO National just completed its 36th annual Sports Awards Breakfast, with more than 300 people in attendance. UNICO has enjoyed a rich tradition for more than 50 years in the Orange-West Orange community, celebrating its Italian culture and heritage, while continuing the legacy of past generations through a bond of service to the community and living up to their motto of “Service above self.”
Event chairman Robert Parisi and event master of ceremonies, and founder Ben Spinelli presented the honorees, as did guest speaker Don Piccolo, Brian Piccolo’s brother, who inspired the unsung hero awards which were the centerpiece of the event.
Brain Piccolo was a Chicago Bears running back who died at the age of 26 in 1970, after a courageous battle with cancer, leaving behind a wife and three young daughters.
He was an example to many, not just for being an athlete, but as one who inspired others to strive and endure through the seasons to be the best they could be, while giving 100 percent at all times.
The athletes honored this year, as unsung heroes and an inspiration to others, are Robert Juliano and Chris Suges of Seton Hall Prep; Kelsey Meehan and Kirby Chery of West Orange High School; Mark Williams and JoAnna Williams of Orange High School; and Jennifer Rothschild and Zachary Schwartzman of Solomon Schechter Day School of Essex and Union.
