Seton Hall Prep varsity wrestler Lou Mascola won his third Region 3 championship last Saturday at Union.
Mascola, a junior, decisioned Tristan Bundy of Scotch Plains, 1-0, in the 125-pound final to improve to 31-0. Mascola became the second SHP wrestler to win three Region titles. The other was Joe Spinazzola from 1977-79.
Mascola pinned Tom Morelli of Middlesex in 4:23 in the quarterfinals; and pinned Troy Skibitsky of Westfield in 1:12 in the semifinals.
SHP freshman 103-pound Brenden Calas also reached the Region final, but lost to Anthony Ashnault of South Plainfield, 5-2, to move to a record of 31-3. Calas beat Jon Miele of Governor Livingston, 18-1, in the quarterfinals and beat Patsy Davis of Madison, 1-0, in the semifinals.
Mascola and Calas advanced to the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association tournament at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City tomorrow through Sunday.
Here are the other SHP wrestlers at the Region tournament:
• Junior 135-pound Robert Faugno lost in the pre-quarterfinals on Feb. 23 to finish the season with a 16-12 record.
• Sophomore 130-pound Michael Cali lost in the pre-quarters to finish 10-15.
• Sophomore 112-pound Eamonn Gaffney lost two matches on Saturday to end 22-12.
• Junior 215-pound Frank Schaafsma won in the pre-quarters and lost twice on Saturday to finish 24-10.
• Senior 189-pound Tyler Selby went 1-2 on Saturday to finish 21-6.
