The Seton Hall Prep varsity soccer team, under head coach Marty Berman, enjoyed a magical season last year, as the Pirates captured the state championship to cap a 20-2-1 campaign.
With a strong returning nucleus, the Pirates are poised to duplicate last season’s remarkable success.
In fact, the Pirates are ranked No. 2 in the nation in the preseason by ESPN Rise Fab 50.
The Pirates boast 19 returning players. Among them are senior forward Hayden Harr (14 goals, 16 assists last year); senior defender and Providence-bound Brandon Adler (six goals, six assists); senior midfielder Matty Berman (three goals, 19 assists), the coach’s son who is committed to Holy Cross; senior forward Devin Perlee (five goals, nine assists), who is headed to Army; and junior goalie Casey DeFluri (20-2-1 mark, 11 shutouts, 0.57 goals-against average).
Last season, the Pirates also won the Super Essex Conference-American Division regular-season title and shared the Essex County Tournament title with Millburn after a scoreless tie in the final. It marked SHP’s first-ever title in the 36-year history of the ECT. SHP then won its fifth NJSIAA North Jersey Non-Public A title with a 2-1 victory over Don Bosco Prep, and beat Christian Brothers Academy, 1-0, to win the NJSIAA Non-Public A crown, its second state title in three years.
SHP finished No. 1 in the state top 20 poll by the Star-Ledger and No. 8 in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. The Pirates also finished No. 13 in the final ESPN RISE FAB 50 and No. 1 in the Soccer Coaches Association of New Jersey (SCANJ) Private/Parochial Division.
Marty Berman won his 300th game in his 24th year as the head coach of SHP with a 1-0 victory over Millburn last year. Going into his 25th season, his record stands at 303-162-42. Following the season, Marty Berman was named the Soccer Coaches Association of New Jersey (SCANJ) Coach of the Year, called the Glenn “Moochie” Myernick Award. At the NSCAA Convention held in Philadelphia, Pa. in January, Marty Berman was named as the East Region Coach of the Year.
The Pirates begin the season Sept. 11 at West Essex in North Caldwell at 5:30 p.m.
