Despite losing in the State sectional tournament final last week, the Seton Hall Prep varsity basketball team had a season to remember.
The top-seeded Pirates lost to third-seeded St. Peter’s Prep of Jersey City, 64-54, in the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association North Jersey Non-Public A tournament championship on March 11 at the Louis Brown Athletic Center in Piscataway, ending the season with a stellar 26-3 record. Junior guard Sterling Gibbs had 22 points and six rebounds and senior forward John Caprio had 12 points, 14 rebounds, five assists and three steals for the Pirates, who led 45-40 entering the fourth quarter.
SHP head coach Bob Farrell was proud of his team despite the loss.
“I cannot second-guess my players at all,” he said. “They worked the game plan to perfection. They played their hearts out.”
Freshman forward Spencer Weisz had nine points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals, and sophomore forward Stephon Mosley had eight points and four rebounds for the Pirates.
This season, the Pirates won the Super Essex Conference-American Division regular-season championship with a 14-0 mark in the first year for the conference. They also finished runner-up in the Essex County Tournament, losing to University, 67-57, in the final. University won the NJSIAA Group 1 title this year.
Gibbs scored his 1,000th career point in the 84-40 home win over Weequahic on Jan. 19. He is ranked No. 4 on the SHP all-time scoring list with 1,359 points. Gibbs’ brother Ashton Gibbs, a 2008 graduate, is the SHP all-time leading scorer with 1,882 points. Ashton Gibbs is a member of the University of Pittsburgh men’s basketball team.
Farrell earned his 750th career win in the 65-56 home victory over Bergen Catholic in the sectional quarterfinals.
St. Peter’s Prep lost to Camden Catholic (28-1), 68-63, in the NJSIAA Non-Public A final this past Sunday at the Ritacco Center in Toms River to end at 25-4.
