SHP hoops advance to sectional final

Junior guard Sterling Gibbs scored 33 points and collected three steals and senior forward John Caprio posted 23 points and a career-high 22 rebounds as the top-seeded Seton Hall Prep of West Orange varsity basketball team defeated fourth-seeded Paramus Catholic, 79-60, on March 8 at home to advance to the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association North Jersey Non-Public A tournament championship.
Caprio also had three assists, three steals and four blocks for the Pirates, who improved to 26-2 and will face third-seeded St. Peter’s Prep of Jersey City in the sectional championship March 11 at the Rutgers Athletic Center in Piscataway at 6 p.m.
Freshman forward Spencer Weisz had 14 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and three steals, and junior guard Maurice Roach had five assists and five rebounds off the bench for the Pirates in the semifinal win.
In the quarterfinals, Gibbs had 35 points and three steals; and Caprio registered 16 points, 16 rebounds, eight assists and three blocks as the Pirates beat ninth-seeded Bergen Catholic, 65-56, on March 5 at home. Sophomore forward Stephon Mosley also had nine points and three rebounds and Weisz had three points, four rebounds, five assists and two steals.
The winner of SHP-St. Peter’s Prep will advance to the NJSIAA Non-Public A championship March 13 at Toms River North High School.
