George S. Hochbergedesco
George S. Hochberg of West Orange died at home Jan. 28. Mr.
Hochberg was born in Newark and resided in West Orange all of his
adult life. A graduate of Columbia High School, Yale University and
Rutgers University Law School, he was a first lieutenant in the
Marine Corps during World War II. Mr. Hochberg practiced law in
Newark, West Orange and Roseland over a 50-year career. He was
active in the United Way and in 1970 became president of the
Council of Social Agencies of Essex and West Hudson and president
of the Community Service Council of the Oranges and Maplewood. He
was a founding member of the Family Law Section of the New Jersey
Bar Association and served as its first chair. Mr. Hochberg is
survived by his wife, Jane; children, David, James and Louise; and
seven grandchildren.
Jeanne Damgen
Jeanne Theresa Damgen, nee Reilly, of West Orange died Jan. 26.
Mrs. Damgen was born in Newark and graduated from Good Counsel High
School. She worked at the Holiday Inn, East Orange for 23 years
before retiring as the hotel’s innkeeper in 1992. Mrs. Damgen is
survived by her husband of 58 years, James; children, James, Kevin,
Jeanne, and Karen Carnevale; sister, Doris Reed; and six
grandchildren.
Laurie Lisa Martin
Laurie Lisa Martin, nee Bombay, of West Orange died Jan 23 at
Mountainside Hospital, Montclair. Born in North Arlington, Mrs.
Martin was a West Orange resident for the past 16 years. She
graduated from Queen of Peace High School in North Arlington and
Montclair State University with a degree in business. She worked as
a program manager for several U.S. defense contractors, including
ITT, Marotta and Allied Signal. Mrs. Martin is survived by her
husband, Bruce; children, Candi and Buttons; parents, George and
Elaine Bombay; and sister, Sharon Tolvay.
Selma Cagin
Selma Cagin, 91, of West Orange died Jan. 25 at home. Born in
Newark, Mrs. Cagin lived most of her life in West Orange. She
studied opera and was a member of the Masterwork Choir, Morristown.
She also exhibited her artwork locally. Mrs. Cagin was predeceased
by her husband, Martin. She is survived by her children, Norman,
Harry and Charles; grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Grace Elizabeth Brady
Grace Elizabeth Brady, 89, died Jan. 27. Mrs. Brady was born in
Newark and lived in Vailsburg until moving to West Orange in 1974.
She served as a Red Cross nurse’s aide during World War II, and was
a reader to the blind. She was a member of the Maplewood Country
Club, and past president of St. Joseph’s Parish Rosary Society. She
received an associate’s degree from Essex County College. Mrs.
Brady is survived by her husband of 58 years, Frank J., M.D.;
children, Frank J. Jr., DPM, Patrice Kirkinis, John A., M.D.,
Susan, F.N.P., Michael A., M.D., and Maureen; and seven
grandchildren.
Alberta Butler
Alberta Butler, nee Lachowitz, 92, of East Hanover, formerly of
West Orange, died Jan. 30 at St. Barnabas Medical Center,
Livingston. Mrs. Butler was born in McKees Rock, Pa., and moved to
Poland at age six. She returned at age 18 to live in Newark, then
West Orange for 43 years before moving to East Hanover in 1988. She
worked as a packer for Mason Keller in Roseland for 28 years before
retiring in 1988. She was a member of the East Hanover Senior
Citizens. Mrs. Butler was predeceased by her husband, Edmund. She
is survived by her children, Diana Russo and Edmund A. Butler; and
three grandchildren.
Blanche P. Ruggiero
Blanche P. Ruggiero, nee Caleo, 93, of West Orange died Jan. 29.
She was born in New York City and lived in West Orange since 1955.
She was account manager for PNC Bank, Northfield Branch, West
Orange before her retirement. She was a member of The Rosary
Society of St. Joseph’s Church. Mrs. Ruggiero was predeceased by
her husband, Mario. She is survived by her children, Barbara Ann
and Robert; and one grandchild.
James Jack Quinn
James Jack Quinn of Hartwell, Ga., formerly of West Orange, died at
home Jan. 8. Mr. Quinn served in the U.S. Navy during World War II
and with the 5th Marines, 1st Division, in the Korean War, where he
was awarded two Purple Hearts and the Bronze Star. After retiring
from N.J. Bell Telephone Co., he worked for Aramco in Saudi Arabia
for 5 1/2 years. Mr. Quinn is survived by his wife of 56 years,
Rita M. (Sporato) Hartwell; children, Thomas, David, and Robin;
brother, Clifford; and several nieces and nephews.
